Since the introduction of the Feed In Tariff (FIT) in 2010, many people have taken advantage of this investment opportunity. Currently, the tariff 14.38p/kWh for systems registered from 01 July 2014 to 31 December 2014. This rate can still give a return of up to 8% giving guaranteed, index linked payments for 20 years. We are frequently asked "what's the catch?". The only catch is that the fund allocated to this is limited, and so is the number of installations. The sooner you get on board the more likely you are to qualify.
How much can I get?
Until the end of December 2014, the feed in tariff will pay you 14.38p per kWh of electricity that your panels generate (for systems of up to 4kW peak capacity). Exported electricity (assumed to be 50% of what you generate) earns 4.77p per kWh. You probably currently pay your electricity supplier around 18p per kWh. So they pay you for the electricity you produce, and you are free to use it yourself - thus saving you a further 17p. That makes it potentially worth up to 35p per kWh. The FiT payments are also tax free and RPI index linked.
